Some semi-important marketing people have identified 'Geezers' as one of Britain's largest social and commercial tribes. Geezers live for money, life and labels, and apparently they're now important enough to be driving the country's consumer culture. Geezers are loud, leery and loaded, and come Friday night you'll find them boozing down the pub flashing the latest designer gear. How did they get to be so rich? By leaving school as fast as possible and going straight to work, rather than going on to study at university and saddling themselves with a decade of debt. In Geezerworld, "Uni is for twats."
There are apparently 10 ways to tell if you're a Geezer. You can check them out here. How did I do? 1. Failed. I wasn't even sure what a Burberry cap looked like until I clicked on this link.
2. Failed. I can do without a designer hangover. Mixing drinks is for wimps.
3. Failed. As far as I'm concerned Kappa isn't for wearing, it's the tenth letter of the Greek alphabet.
4. Failed. £60 for a night out? Maybe £60 for a week out.
5. Failed.That song merely reminds me that Frank Skinner can't sing.
6. Failed. Sunday mornings are for sleeping in, not for physical exertion with the pub footie team.
7. Failed. I shudder if a pair of trainers costs £50, let alone £140.
8. Failed. No, I am not doing braids, mohicans or curtains. I'll stick with March 2000 thanks.
9. Failed. I don't think any of my schoolmates still live in Watford, and to be honest who could blame them?
10. Failed. But I'm really glad I got through university back when they paid you and not the other way round.
I suspect Geezers are really nothing new (remember casuals? remember townies? remember Harry Enfield's Loadsamoney?). However, I suspect there are more of them now than there ever were, and I'm definitely not one of them. If you come back here in the future and find I've renamed the site 'diamond geek', don't be too surprised.
