It's a bank holiday in the UK so, while all the Brits are outside burning sausages in their back gardens, I can chat to my international audience for a change. Hello America.
Vote050505: 10 reasons why our General Elections are better than your Presidential Elections 1) We have longer between elections: Officially, at least. You lot only go four years between yours, whereas we can go up to five. 2) Our elections don't happen at set times: Our Prime Minister usually decides to go to the country early, which means we never quite know in advance precisely when our elections will happen. You lot know the exact dates of all your Presidential elections for the whole of the next century, and beyond. 3) Our elections are over quicker: We only get a month's notice of polling day, not the interminable ten month campaign that you lot suffer. 4) Our winner takes over immediately: You have to wait ten weeks for the inauguration of a President, during which period the old one limps on without a mandate. Our new PM will be in charge by Friday lunchtime. 5) We have more than two candidates to choose from: Our candidates may not be much better than your candidates, but a smaller percentage of them are evil warmongering liars. 6) We have more than two parties to choose from: It's always good to have more than two choices because life isn't just black and white. Or indeed only red and blue. 7) At least one of our main parties is left of centre: We could, however, spend all day debating which one of our main parties it is. 8) Our constituencies are all approximately the same size: We Brits each share our MP with no more than 100000 other electors. If you live in California, on the other hand, your single vote is drowned out by up to 22 million others. 9) Our candidates can't buy TV adverts: British elections are not yet slanging matches dominated by the negative advertising campaign backed by the fattest wallet. Long may it stay that way. 10) Our electoral system is trustworthy and reliable: No chance of a massive Florida-style voting fraud scandal over here, oh no. Not until they count the postal votes on Thursday...
