Bible proverbs quiz*: Eight of the following ten nuggets of wisdom are taken from the Bible. From the Book of Proverbs, King James Version, to be precise. And the other two I've made up. For those people who take the Bible literally (and there are many), the eight truthful proverbs below are touchstones for the way they live their everyday lives. Of course they are, because you can't pick and choose from universal truth can you? But art thou wise enough to spot the two false proverbs?
1) Rejoice with the wife of thy youth; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
2) The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.
3) As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
4) A wicked man maketh sloth with the wisdom of fools; and the price of false witness is an abomination.
5) He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.
6) And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
7) It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
8) Train up a daughter in the ways of righteousness, and she will serve you well.
9) Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
10) As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.
* Today's quiz was inspired by the uplifting book of Bible-inspired moral teaching that I was forced to read over someone's shoulder in the crush on the tube yesterday morning.
5pm update: So far, between you, you're most suspicious about 2, 4, 6 and 8. You're quite suspicious about 5, 7 and 10. And you're not at all suspicious about 3 and 9 (and you'd be right, because 3 and 9 are both Biblical Proverbs). More later.
Midnight update: I've linked the eight genuine proverbs to an appropriate page of Bible-inspired moral teaching. Read and learn.
