Every February on diamond geezer I keep myself busy by counting things. Ten different counts, to be precise, in a stats-tastic 28-day feature called The Count. You'll therefore be delighted to hear that I intend to do exactly the same again this year (OK, geeks and stalkers will be delighted, while everyone else will probably go off and poke Facebook or whatever you social types do for fun). This is the seventh February I've spent counting, so I have lots of thrilling historical data to compare the latest figures with. This year I've decided to drop two of my ten original counts because they're not very informative, and to replace them with two almost-exciting alternatives. Here's the updated list of ten countables for February 2009.
Count 1: Number of visits to this blog (Feb 2008 total: 32006) Count 2: Number of comments on this blog (new for 2009) Count 3: Number of words I wrote on this blog (Feb 2008 total: 17606) Count 4: How many hours each day I work/rest/play (new for 2009) Count 5: Number of nights I go out and am vaguely sociable (Feb 2008 total: 7) Count 6: Number of bottles of Becks I drink (Feb 2008 total: 28) Count 7: Number of cups of tea I drink (Feb 2008 total: 134) Count 8: Number of trains I travel on (Feb 2008 total: 117) Count 9: Number of escalators I walk up (Feb 2008 total: 33) Count 10: The Mystery Count(Feb 2008 total: 0)
I usually keep track of all these figures in a spreadsheet, but this year I thought I'd use a new online website called Daytum. Daytum is a real-time graphic tracker, currently in invite-only beta, which displays numbers in a pretty way. I have no idea how well Daytum's service'll work, and I'm not yet certain which types of graph to use for optimum effect, but hopefully it'll be more interesting this way. Being day 1 there's nothing much to report on Daytum yet (although I have already had two Becks since the month began, which is a good start). I intend to update my counts on Daytum at least once a day until the end of the month, and then I'll come back and tell you how my February went. Stalk away.
