I took the train to
Audley End,
The mansion was
my goal.
It's just one hour from Liv'pool Street
And half an hour's stroll.
It's somewhat
pricey to get in,
You pay up at the gate,
But there's
a good amount to see
Across the whole
estate.
The
house is early Jacobean,
The
Great Hall is a beauty,
Each room beyond holds many tales,
Just ask the guides on duty.
The high point is the Royal bed -
Lord Braybrooke hoped for fame
So had this huge
four poster built,
But King George never came.
Do look in on the service wing,
To see the maids in caps.
And join the tearoom queue for scones,
I liked their pulled pork baps.
The
gardens are especially fine,
Some
formal, some more
'kitchen',
The
River Cam flows slowly through
The view can be bewitchin'.
Meet horses in the stable block -
Their names are Bob and Robbie,
Or gasp at the
amazing hedge,
It must be someone's hobby.
For added bonus cross the road,
And ride the
mini train,
A lengthy
loop runs through the
woods,
The teddy bears'
domain!
A bit of history, bit of fun,
The
grounds are neat and orderly.
I wonder if perhaps you'd like,
A genteel time at
Audley.
