Coronation facts (1066-2023)
♔ The three monarchs who missed out on a coronation were Edward V, Lady Jane Grey and Edward VIII.
♔ Every other monarch since Harold (1066) has been crowned at Westminster Abbey.
♔ Henry III had two coronations, one at Gloucester (1216) and one at Westminster (1220)
♔ The shortest gap between accession and coronation was 1 day, for King Harold.
♔ The longest gap was 7 years for Henry VI (because crowning a baby isn't appropriate)
♔ In medieval and Tudor times the gap was normally two or three months to allow nobles time to gather.
♔ Since George IV the gap has been over a year to allow time for suitable preparations.
→ except George VI's gap was just 5 months because he filled Edward VIII's planned slot.
♔ The youngest king to be crowned was 7 year-old Henry VI.
♔ Before today the oldest king to be crowned was William IV (a mere 66)
♔ Before James I three-quarters of coronations were on Sundays.
→ all the coronations in the 15th and 16th centuries were on Sundays.
♔ Since James I half of coronations have been on Thursdays.
→ all the coronations in the 18th and 19th centuries were midweek.
♔ No coronation has been held on a Friday.
♔ The last coronation to be held on a Saturday was Edward VII (1902)
→ the only other Saturday coronation was Harold in 1066.
♔ Three coronations have been held on St George's Day (Charles II, James II and Anne)
♔ The only other shared date is 28th June (Edward IV and Victoria)
♔ Before Cromwell coronation dates were spread across the year.
♔ Since Cromwell no coronations have been held between November and March.
♔ October has had the most coronations (six)
♔ March and November are the two coronation-free months.
♔ All the Stuarts were crowned in May.
♔ All the Windsors have been crowned in May or June.
♔ The shortest gap between coronations was 353 days (Harold to William the Conqueror)
♔ The second shortest gap was 2 years 3 months (Richard III to Henry VII)
♔ The longest gap between coronations ends today.
