My day in haiku
(that's seventeen syllables;
five, seven and five)

 Wake as the dawn breaks
grey, damp and miserable
Kettle on... mug... tea
The forecast's worsened,
rain now expected all day
but this won't stop me

 Out for a paper.
Seven coins are surrendered
— a rare use of cash
Bow's streets are quiet;
a few folk at the bus stop,
occasional cars

 Queues at the drive-through
for coffee and McMuffins
(cereal's passé)
A concrete mixer
speeds up the arterial
straight through a puddle

 You step to the left,
I divert into the road.
Distancing ballet
The Carpenters Arms.
Windows boarded. Is it dead
or hibernating?

 Four naked lift cores.
One's 8 storeys, then 7,
21 and 12
Westfield's lights twinkle,
the tree's up and baubles glow,
but no shoppers come

 Broken umbrella,
spokes askew and handle snapped
in a stack of tyres
Cluster of fungi
(too ugly for Instagram)
around foot of tree

 The 339 bus
meanders passengerless
through QEOP
Middle-aged cyclists
out for a Saturday ride
blocking the footbridge

 Hey Mr Squirrel,
hope you stashed enough away.
Nut season's over
Please Use Zebra Cross-
ing To The Left As Footpath
On The Right Is Closed

 Council streetsweeper
bagging leaves, fighting autumn,
losing the battle
Home before more rain,
horizons still limited.
Kettle on... mug... tea

 Lay back in the bath.
Thumping bass leaks from nextdoor,
stompy child above
Done half the crossword.
10 across is 'amigo'
but 5 down baffles

 Blogged about roundels.
Email arrives from artist.
Cheers Maud and good luck!
After the sun sets
fairy lights in the hallway
brighten my passage

 I miss gas cooking.
My pasta now boils over,
damn you electric.
Old cassette, press play:
Twilight Cafe, Fade To Grey,
Einstein-A-Go-Go

 Guy Fawkes was last week
so why the fireworks, unless...
Ah yes Divali
Yay, Blackadder 2!
I've seen it dozens of times,
but still brilliant

Your day in haiku
click to add your poetry
(the best seventeen)
       On annual leave
Woke up at five anyway
Pissing down with rain
       Snooze: ten more minutes.
Another ten. Another.
Half eleven? Yikes!

Self-isolation
Only nine days left until
I can leave the house

Veg box to use up
I should eat that aubergine
Bloody beetroot too

Strictly Come Dancing
Was enjoyable this week
Saturday highlight

Dinner with a friend
Takeaway pizza and wine
Cold bench by the Thames

Covent Garden tree
Trafalgar fountains in lights
Twinkly but so damp.

new East Wick café
has pallets on the ceiling
It's a look, I guess.

Cats scatter in fright!
Neighbours' rockets exploding
in torrential rain

Cat is sick. Plan to
Take her to the vet. But she
Quickly recovers

Gas cooking is best
Simmering is no problem
Off means off - no sweat

Ditch is flowing fast
Windfall apples rushing past
Where will they all go?

My fence has blown down
No post to look forward to
I go back to bed

Hard graft all morning
Clearing parkland's greenery
Getting wet, again.

The grass is now cut
I had kept putting it off
Hope it does not die

mellow fruitfulness
taking stuff to compost heap -
but who will use it?

Drink my coffee and
sit at the computer to
