JUBILEE: Alternative routes
The Jubilee Line nearly didn't go to Stratford. Previous plans, and there have been many, envisaged the extension weaving along the Thames instead. Some of those early schemes became the DLR, while the dogleg up to Stratford was prompted by the East London Rail Study in the late 1980s. In the meantime here's a brief sketchy summary of the Jubilee extension's evolution.
