"So," said BestMate, "how do you fancy going away for a long weekend this summer?"
"Great," I said. "There's bugger all in my calendar apart from the second weekend in July, when there's something going on in Finsbury Park, so let's try to avoid that."
"It has to be the second weekend in July," he said. "It's that or nothing."
"No problem," I said. "It was only a load of old buses, and I've seen a load of old buses before."
Ah yes, today is Routemaster 60, a diamond jubilee celebration for London's favourite bus. The first Routemaster appeared in public in 1954, and it along with 140 of its fellow vehicles will be lining up for adoration and free rides at a big event in Finsbury Park. Something very similar happened ten years ago, and I went to that, and this'll just be the same thing but bigger and with a larger number on the front.
The event's also on tomorrow, in case that helps you to get along, but it doesn't help me because I'll still be overseas. So if you'd like to go on my behalf, and maybe bung a report in the comments box, or even email it to me, that'd be great.
"I mean, it's only a load of old buses," I said, "and I can see a load of old buses some other time."
But if anyone else is planning on inviting me on holiday in the future, please note that the second weekend in July in fifteen years' time is already taken.
