If you're reading this 7am, there are precisely 1000 hours to go until the UK leaves the EU (or doesn't, or delays making a decision until a later date, or whatever).
And still nobody is any clearer about what the final outcome of those 1000 hours will be.
We're here thanks to a sequence of collective decisions with unexpected outcomes.
2015
ANOTHER
COALITION
| TORY
MAJORITY |
2016
2017
ANOTHER
COALITION
| TORY
MAJORITY |
Not forgetting these key choices...
2015
JEREMY
CORBYN
| ANY OTHER
LABOUR LEADER |
2017
LET'S INITIATE
ARTICLE 50 NOW
| LET'S HOLD
BACK A BIT |
2019
I HAVE
A DEAL
| WE HATE
YOUR DEAL |
Next we'll be facing this...
I HAVE MUCH
THE SAME DEAL
| WE STILL HATE
YOUR DEAL |
...and then, who knows?
There's no Parliamentary majority for any of these.
CLOSER DEAL
| NO THANKS |
BACKSTOPLESS DEAL
| NO THANKS |
NO DEAL
| NO THANKS |
Even trying to extend Article 50 might not save us.
THREE MORE MONTHS
OF INDECISION | NO YOU CANNOT
EXTEND ARTICLE 50 |
Asking the public probably wouldn't settle anything.
SECOND
REFERENDUM
| IT'D ONLY
MAKE THINGS WORSE |
GENERAL
ELECTION
| IT'D ONLY
MAKE THINGS WORSE |
The Prime Minister seems keen to drag the final vote right down to the wire.
But if nobody makes a decision, then the default option is fixed.
MPS MAKE THEIR
MINDS UP | NO DEAL
|
Imagine getting to the last days of March with no decision in sight.
PANIC BUYING
CIVIL UNREST
ECONOMIC CRISIS
NATIONAL CHAOS | HANG ON
WE COULD JUST
REVOKE ARTICLE 50
COULD'T WE?
|
Or perhaps a No Deal scenario wouldn't be so bad after all.
CRASH OUT
| SUNLIT UPLANDS
SEAMLESS TRADE
ADEQUATE FOOD |
In 1000 hours time we should have a much clearer idea of our nation's fate.
CHOICE 1a
| CHOICE 1b |
CHOICE 2a
| CHOICE 2b |
CHOICE 3a | CHOICE 3b
|
CHOICE 4a
| CHOICE 4b |
CHOICE 5a | CHOICE 5b
|
But still nobody knows what that fate will be...
...nor how we get there.
