This is the seventh decade I've lived in, despite being less than six decades old.
My Dad's doing better, he's now in his tenth decade so has collected the full set. He's doing particularly well because he's barely into his eighties, but being born at the end of a decade has helped to bump up his total.
Technically, if you're born on the last day of a decade you experience your (X+2)th decade the day after your (X×10)th birthday.
Conversely, if you're born on the first day of a decade you're still in your Xth decade the day before your (X×10)th birthday.
If you'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year, please do so in the appropriate comments box below.
Also, welcome to a decade with a proper name! It's been a while.
Since the Nineties ended we've lived through a decade unofficially termed the Noughties, followed by a decade that hasn't managed to attract a generally accepted label at all. It's going to make future retrospectives a little trickier.
But now we're back in the Twenties again.
The 1900s ended up being called the Edwardian era, thanks to an almost perfect royal coincidence.
The 1910s are dominated in our historical thinking by World War One, so never needed their own label either.
The last Twenties had the General Strike and flappers and was often described as Roaring, but that Twenties has just been trumped by this Twenties and may now start to fade away. Indeed the 1990s have long overtaken the 1890s as the official Nineties, just as the 2020s should now oust the 1920s in our collective memory. Happy New Twenties!
