Some tube seats get used more than others.

This is one end of a District line carriage. The seat on the left is closest to the driver's cabin. The seat on the right is closest to the doors.
The seat in the middle is a lot less worn than the seats to either side because, given the choice, people prefer to sit at the end of the row. I think the seat on the left is slightly more worn than the seat on the right because people prefer the privacy of the seat furthest from the doors, but that's arguable.
If you're on an emptyish train today, perhaps muse on what the erosion of the moquette tells you about people's preferred seating habits. And also perhaps wonder whether backside erosion should be quite so evident after less than ten years' wear and tear.
